Rute, is located in the Natural Park of the Sierras Subbéticas, forming part of the mountain nucleus called Sierra de Rute and Horconera. In its surroundings there are places of great scenic beauty that are a good place for hiking and other activities such as mountain biking, paragliding, speleology, climbing, motocross, horseback riding, … as well as countless natural viewpoints from where you can enjoy some spectacular views.

The Sierra de Rute is included within the most rugged and elevated mountainous range of Córdoba, constituting the southernmost reliefs of the Subbética in this province. It has heights that exceed 1,100 meters, such as Sierra Alta (1,326 m.), The Sierra de Las Cruces (1,270 m.) And El Morrón de El Salvador (1,170 m.).

Regarding the vegetation, in its lowest part we find the generalized olive grove. Next, a strip of dense forest of replanted Aleppo pine can be seen.

Finally, when the excessive inclination of the land, hinders the development of the pine forest, groups of Mediterranean low scrub appear, which on the sunny slopes is dominated by species such as rosemary, esparto grass, gorse, thyme, kermes oak, matagallo or junipers, while in the more shady side appear species in greater need of humidity and less insolation such as Valencian oak, hawthorn, terebinth, honeysuckle and sporadic examples of maples, strawberry trees, brooms…

From the faunistic point of view there is a great variety of interesting species, such as raptor populations: owl, kestrel, Bonelli’s eagle, buzzard, goshawk, sparrowhawk, owl, highlighting the peregrine falcon, symbol of the Natural Park of the Sierras Subbéticas and the griffon vulture. Among the mammals, we can highlight the wild boar, badgers, hares and rabbits, ferrets, genets and foxes, as well as some mountain goats.
