Neighbourhood of la Barrera

La Barrera, 14900 - Lucena (Córdoba)
This traditional neighbourhood of Lucena, associated with the fandango (lively couples dance from Iberia, usually in triple metre, traditionally accompanied by guitars and castanets or hand-clapping) of Lucena, has several remarkable elements. On the one hand, the fountain, inaugurated in 1773 taking advantage of a cistern of attributed Roman value that existed next to the hermitage of Santa Marta. Its pile of red jasper is square and has a central column of two sections, the first cylindrical and the second bulbous crowned by a circular pool and covered with water outlet through four pipes. The cross was erected in 1632, but was then located lower than its present location. The old hermitage of Nuestra Sra. De Araceli (Our Lady of Araceli) in the Barrera, of which only its cover remains, was built around 1694 by the master Antonio Martín de la Serena. It had in origin altar and plaster altarpiece, work of Alberto de Guzmán and Francisco Hurtado, directed by Leonardo Antonio de Castro.
