Asunción Church

At the foot of the Cerro del Castillo, in a spot that can be seen from all over the village, stands the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which is majestic. The origin of this construction is not known with certainty, but it could be that the old Iglesia Mayor de Santa María, to which Ruy Díaz de Berrio referred in his will, as early as 1983, perhaps corresponded to the location of the current church, but not to the construction, which has been modified over the centuries and has a very different aesthetic from that which prevailed in those times. But this is only a guess, because nothing remains of the original construction. Rafael Osuna Luque, in his 'Historia de Carcabuey', tells us that the church 'was finished around the middle of the 16th century, however, only the side doorway remains from that time; the rest of the current construction corresponds to works carried out during the 17th and early 18th centuries'. These later works are: the tower, completed, as an inscription at the foot of the tower says in 1780, and the main altarpiece, as well as the Sagrario chapel and the barrel vaults with lunettes that cover the interior of the building.
