Natural Park of the Subbética Mountains

The Natural Park of the Subbética Mountains is located in the northwest of the province of Córdoba, making it the geographical center of Andalusia. It covers an area of 32,056 hectares in the Baetic mountain range. The Cordoban municipalities included in the socio-economic influence area are Cabra, Carcabuey, Doña Mencia, Iznajar, Priego de Córdoba, Rute, Luque, and Zuheros. The Subbética Mountains host the highest peak in the province at La Tiñosa, reaching 1,570 meters.

The Subbética Mountains Park obtained the designation of a Protected Natural Space on July 28, 1989. Additionally, in 2006, this area was recognized as a member of the European Geoparks Network by the European Committee. Furthermore, since 2015, it has the designation of a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The creation of the Natural Park aims to guide and organize a region with special natural and socio-cultural values. Its goal is the protection and conservation of the landscape and the natural associations of flora and fauna; in other words, to preserve from deterioration those areas worthy of conservation. The multitude of nuances that adorn its landscapes bear witness to a deep-rooted tradition, reflected in a rural environment and its characteristic agricultural uses of these mountains. On the one hand, there are genuine representations of the karstic landscape, frequent endemisms, and a great floral diversity. On the other hand, this Park is a privileged habitat for species such as the peregrine falcon, Cabrera's water shrew, and the river crab.

The typical vegetation is that of the Mediterranean environment and is characterized by the presence of few tree species and low elevation, a great variety of shrub species, and a poorly developed herbaceous layer. Holm oak and kermes oak are the main species, although wild olive trees and almond trees are also important, as well as poplars and ash trees along the rivers. Among the species that make up the underbrush and shrubland, there are rockroses, strawberry trees, junipers, savins, heathers, and mastic trees. At the lower level, asparagus, brambles, ivy, gorses, and thyme are abundant. For their special beauty, we must mention peonies, and for their exceptional relevance, we highlight the existence of endemic species. The protected area is formed by a set of rocky massifs, steep slopes, and altitudes that sometimes exceed 1500 meters. These geographical characteristics set them apart from the rest of the surrounding territory. Here, the highest rainfall indices in the province are recorded.
