This town is located in the southernmost part of the Subbetic region, bordering the province of Malaga and situated 40 km away from the capital. Its name comes from Palencia, due to the numerous inhabitants from Palencia who were in the municipality dismantling holm oaks and making charcoal during the 13th century, at the height of the Reconquest.

Palenciana stands out for its popular architecture, characterized by whitewashed streets, lattice and high and low grilles.
