Ceramic Kiln (12th-13th centuries).

This kiln was excavated in 1993 by the Museum (Municipal Archaeology Service). The enhancement work involved the construction of an octagonal pergola dominated by a metal structure with glass enclosure and a ceramic tile roof. Inside, there is the kiln, centrally positioned, along with various museographic elements (information panels about Islamic medieval Priego and its pottery district, and a model of the reconstructed kiln).

The pottery district of Madinat Baguh, in the 12th and 13th centuries, was located in the vicinity of the current streets Lozano Sidro and San Marcos, occupying an approximate area of 1.5 hectares. In this sector, numerous ceramic kilns of different typologies have been excavated since 1993, along with other structures of interest: clay extraction trenches, reservoirs, walls, pavements...

The location of the potteries in this area of the town was not accidental. There was abundant water here, extracted through wells, and a suitable geological substrate with plenty of clays suitable for modeling. Also, the district was on the outskirts of the suburbs, so its activity (smoke emissions, waste accumulation, etc.) did not excessively disturb the neighbors.

The kiln is partially excavated underground, with a keyhole-shaped plan, and consists of the following parts:

· Firing chamber: Circular in shape, it has series of perforations on the walls that were used to place bars or rolls of ceramics, forming shelves that held the ceramics during firing. This cylindrical chamber was open at the top and had several side chimneys.

· Fire chamber: It is a rectangular-shaped structure attached to the firing chamber. This is where both the entrance to the kiln and the area where the fire was controlled were located.

Despite its medium size, several hundred pieces could be fired at once in this kiln. The complete row of preserved holes has 77 openings, supporting a linear shelf of 6.10 meters in length by about 35 cm in width. If we know, from the study of the collapse fragments, that the kiln could have had up to six shelves, the total usable linear shelf length is around 39 meters. In addition, the central space of the firing chamber was used to place large pieces, such as jars.
