Flora and fauna

In the Subbética region, two well-differentiated areas stand out: on one hand, the one located within the Natural Park of the Subbética Mountains formed by gentle hills and valleys, and on the other hand, the countryside area, rich in vineyards, cereal fields, and olive groves.

Regarding the flora of the Natural Park, typically Mediterranean, there are 17 Habitats of Community Interest that host a high number of threatened species (11 from the Andalusian Catalog of Threatened Species), as well as the highest floristic diversity in the province of Córdoba (more than 1880 species), including some endemics exclusive to these mountains.

Holm oak predominates, along with a large proportion of gall oaks. The cushion spiny scrub stands out on the highest summits, as well as the fine broom and the blue broom, the latter known as "cojín de monja".

It should be noted that in the cliffs, ravines, cracks, crevices..., the presence of cliff-nesting birds such as the peregrine falcon, Eurasian eagle-owl, griffon vulture, golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, red-billed chough, and redstart has been determined.

Finally, the abundant cavities in the geopark offer shelter to a significant diversity of bats, with 16 species described.
