Doña Mencía Castle

The castle we know today was built by Diego Fernández de Córdoba in the 15th century. The fortress, with cylindrical towers at the corners and square ones on its sides, including the 'Homenaje' tower, is perfectly integrated into the urban center, contributing with its presence to magnify and provide medieval charm to the surroundings. Five stages of occupation have prevailed in the history of Doña Mencía Castle. The first, dating back to the late Roman period, around the 4th, 5th, and 6th centuries, was due to a rural settlement or 'villa' dedicated to agricultural tasks. The second in the 13th century, with the people of the Order of Calatrava who erected a watchtower. The third took place at the beginning of the 15th century, with Mudéjar architects in the service of the House of Fernández de Córdoba, building the castle to accommodate a larger number of troops. The fourth stage, initiated in the 16th century, would correspond to the transformation of the castle into new functions as a warehouse, barn, and mill, and would extend until the 19th century. As for the fifth stage, it developed at the beginning of the 20th century with the nuns of Christ the King.
