This village was named after Mrs Mencia Lopez de Haro. She was the wife of the Spanish captain Mr Alvar Perez de Castro who served King Ferdinand III. The village is surrounded by the Sierras Subbeticas and next to its Natural Park. In the nearby there are many important archaeological sites. Several items found in there are exposed in its Historic-Archaeological Museum.
The village was immortalised by the Spanish writer Juan Valera in many of his novels. These texts mention several places of Doña Mencia which still exist. Together, they form the “Valerian Route”.
